Under Her Wing: Women, Waterfowl & a Savage Journey

If there's anything more exciting than an incoming flock, it's introducing another woman to the thrill of wingshooting.

The pale, wintry sky fills suddenly with airborne wings and the raucous calls of Canada geese. You're lying on your back in a blind, 12-gauge shotgun at the ready, just waiting. Then comes the moment when the birds set their pinions and the clatter of wings joins the chorus of honks. You tighten your grip and the adrenaline floods as you sit up ... what could possibly be more thrilling? Savage Arms set out to answer that question with its Savage Journeys series, and the answer seems to be "mentoring another woman into that moment."

"I'm kind of an adult-onset hunter," smiles Courtney Nicholson, one of the hunt's mentors. "Nobody else in my family hunts." That may be a situation familiar to many NRA Women, and like so many of us, Nicholson's journey as a hunter was instead traveled with mentors outside her family. Now, she's eager to pay it forward by mentoring a new hunter herself.

In this great video, you'll get to sit next to Nicholson and others in the blind as they turn those wild wings into tonight's dinner. You may notice that their shotgun of choice is the Savage Renegauge, and we here at NRA Women can attest that the 2021 NRA Women Golden Bullseye Award-winner is a terrific pick for a new woman hunter.

"Maybe you were searching for a way to consume lean, organic-as-it-gets meat for health reasons," say the folks at Savage Arms. "Maybe you were looking to expand your love of the outdoors and experience something new. No matter how you arrived, Savage is glad that something lit a flame within you to start your hunting journey." If you'd like to read the full story that accompanies this video, check it out here!
