A mother of four was relaxing in her living room on a Sunday night while her children slept. When she heard noises coming from her basement, she thought it was her dog—until she noticed her pet lying on the floor. The homeowner retrieved a handgun from a nearby drawer and went to investigate. Downstairs she discovered her male neighbor holding a rifle case, who told her he was there to play with her dog and give her the gun because he was worried about her while her husband was away. He took the lit back porchlight as a sign that it was OK to come inside. The woman calmly told him to leave or she would shoot. (madison.com, La Crosse, Wis., 10/01/19)

A man and his daughter proved that preparedness can save one’s life. The two were at home on a Thursday night when suddenly a man kicked in the front door. He was bleeding from his foot, and told the homeowner that he was running from someone. The intruder attempted to lock the door behind him, but the father feared for his daughter’s safety. While the homeowner kept an eye on the stranger, he told his daughter to grab his gun. They had practiced drills for just such an emergency and she knew what to do. The father was able to hold the intruder at gunpoint until police arrived and took the intruder into custody. (knss.radio.com, Salina, Kans., 09/22/19)
