Stoeger Str40 Lede

When it comes to personal defense calibers, it's all about stopping power ... and when it comes to stopping power, the .40 is an excellent choice, with a 90% one-shot stop rate. Now for 2023, Stoeger has updated its popular STR line of striker-fired, polymer-frame defensive handguns to include the beefy .40 S&W chambering. There are four model variations so you have ample choice between guns with slides pre-cut for optics and carrying capacity. Best of all, the manufacturer's suggested price starts at $329 for the base model—which means that it will certainly be available for less at dealers.

Since its debut, the Stoeger STR series pistols have impressed reviewers (like our own B. Gil Horman) with their reliability and excellent performance-to-price ratio. "The Glock-inspired STR-9SC fell neatly in with its compatriots by demonstrating a level of craftsmanship and reliability that belies the suggested retail pricing," he wrote of the STR's older brother. Previously available only in 9 mm, the STR line is now getting its first caliber expansion.

Top-end features include an integrated rail guiding a nitride-hardened matte black receiver, loaded chamber indicator, aggressive front and rear slide serrations for easy actuation, internal safety and a reversible magazine release for you lefties. The pistol's mid-size frame offers exceptional muzzle control and comfort and includes an accessory rail for lights or lasers. A quick-read three-dot sight system delivers a clear sight picture for fast follow-up shots. This model series is offered with a 12+1 (#31767) or 10+1 (#31772) capacity and comes with one magazine and backstrap.

In addition to the standard models, the STR-40 is also available with an optic-compatible slide and tritium night sights in 12+1 (#31773) and 10+1 (#31774) capacities. The night sights make the STR-40 ideal for home defense or everyday carry applications, and the optic-cut slide comes with a cover plate and four adapters to work with today's most popular red dot systems.
