The 16-gauge isn't a "new" chambering, of course; once upon a time a 16-gauge shotgun was the top choice for knowledgeable upland hunters and recreational shooters. That's because, as the conventional wisdom of the time had it, the 16 gauge "carries like a 20 but hits like a 12."
