Staying Strong While Becoming an Aging Defender

A Virginia chapter of Armed Women of America was treated to a popular seminar by the country's leading authority on maintaining self-defense skills well into the senior years.

On October 21, 2025, members of the Bull Run Chapter of Armed Women of America (AWA) gathered for an evening with Dr. Joseph Logar, NRA Director of Community Engagement and manager of the NRA Adaptive Shooting Program. Known for his pioneering work in adaptive shooting and for his engaging, down-to-earth approach, Dr. Logar presented a modified version of his popular seminar, The Aging Defender, a favorite at the NRA Annual Meeting & Exhibits.

With more than a dash of humor, Dr. Logar focused on how shooters can maintain and even improve performance throughout their lives, introducing a series of simple but effective exercises designed to strengthen grip and enhance recoil management. He also shared tiered support strategies for managing common challenges such as tremors and reduced mobility. Dr. Logar’s emphasis on practical, evidence-based solutions empowered AWA’s participants to experiment with training adaptations and to continue to pursue shooting sports safely and confidently.

After his presentation, Dr. Logar joined the group on the range at NRA headquarters in Fairfax, Virginia, for a hands-on session where theory met practice. Members received personalized tips on shooting mechanics and posture, grounded in a deep understanding of how seemingly small adjustments can lead to outsized results.

As one of the country’s foremost experts in adaptive shooting, Dr. Logar continues to lead the way in making shooting sports accessible and enjoyable for everyone, regardless of age or abilities. His presentation to AWA’s Bull Run Chapter was simple but powerful: with the right mindset and training approach, every defender can stay strong and confident for years to come.
